Tuesday, Dec. 8 was an important day for Clear Springs fourth grader Luke Hauser and his family: it marked the one-year anniversary of his liver transplant.
To celebrate the occasion, Luke's teacher at Clear Springs Elementary, Brooke Igl, and his classmates made a plan to recognize the day in "true fourth grade style." With the help of parent volunteers, the class planned a virtual surprise party, complete with matching t-shirts and Luke's favorite snacks. Students also compiled a collection of video messages celebrating Luke's positivity, his sense of humor and his ability to persevere through adversity.
"As an educator it has always been my goal to 'love first,'" said Ms. Igl. "When that happens, teaching and learning follows. Instilling empathy and compassion for others, building community and celebrating the joys in life are essential, and for these 4th grade e-learners, it matters more than ever."
"We strive to teach empathy in all we do," said Curt Carpenter, Clear Springs Elementary Principal. "This was a powerful, real-life example of helping our students feel what other people feel. Through this celebration for Luke, Ms. Igl helped her students understand the challenges and the triumphs that Luke has experienced in his life. We are so excited for Luke!"
